Psychiatric Evaluations

Understanding What’s Really Going On Is the First Step to Feeling Better.

Before anything can change, something has to be understood.

If you’ve been struggling — with your mood, your thoughts, your behavior, your relationships — and you’re not sure why, a psychiatric evaluation is where answers begin. It’s not a test you can pass or fail. It’s a conversation designed to help us understand you — so we can build a care plan that actually works.

At New Concepts II, our psychiatric evaluations are thorough, compassionate, and completely judgment-free.

What Is a Psychiatric Evaluation?

A psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive assessment conducted by a licensed psychiatric provider to understand your mental health history, current symptoms, and overall wellbeing. It goes deeper than a quick check-in — it’s a structured process designed to give your provider the full picture so that nothing important gets missed.

Think of it as the foundation of your care. Everything that comes next — whether that’s therapy, medication, neurofeedback, or a combination — is built on what we learn during your evaluation.

What Does the Evaluation Cover?

Every evaluation at New Concepts II is tailored to the individual, but generally includes a review of:

Current symptoms - what you're experiencing, when it started, and how it's affecting your daily life
Mental health history - past diagnoses, treatments, hospitalizations, and what has or hasn't worked before
Medical history - physical health conditions and medications that may be connected to your mental health
Family history - hereditary patterns that can inform diagnosis and treatment
Substance use - an honest, non-judgmental look at alcohol or drug use and its role in your symptoms
Social and lifestyle factors - relationships, work, living situation, trauma history, and support systems
Current medications and supplements - to ensure any new recommendations are safe and appropriate

Who Should Get a Psychiatric Evaluation?

A psychiatric evaluation is a good starting point if you:

  • Are experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, mood swings, or emotional dysregulation
  • Have been struggling but don’t yet have a diagnosis or a clear direction for treatment
  • Feel like your current treatment isn’t working and want a fresh, expert perspective
  • Are dealing with both mental health and substance use challenges at the same time
  • Have been referred by a therapist, primary care provider, or other specialist
  • Are a parent or caregiver concerned about a child or adolescent’s mental health
  • Are a veteran navigating the unique mental health challenges that come with military service

We serve children, adolescents, adults, veterans, and individuals with developmental differences — so wherever you are in life, there’s a place for you here.

What Happens After the Evaluation?

At the end of your evaluation, your provider will share their findings with you clearly and honestly. Together, you’ll discuss:

  • A diagnosis or a working clinical impression of what may be driving your symptoms
  • Treatment recommendations — which may include medication management, neurofeedback, light therapy, addiction treatment, or a referral to a therapist or specialist
  • Next steps — a clear, practical plan so you leave knowing exactly what comes next

You won’t walk out with a stack of paperwork and a vague sense of what to do. You’ll leave with clarity and a path forward.
