SPRAVATO Treatment

SPRAVATO Treatment
When Nothing Else Has Worked, There Is Still Hope.
If you’ve tried antidepressant after antidepressant and still haven’t found relief, you are not alone — and you haven’t run out of options.
SPRAVATO® is a breakthrough FDA-approved treatment for adults with treatment-resistant depression. At New Concepts II, we are proud to offer this innovative therapy to patients who have been struggling without answers for far too long.
What Is SPRAVATO®?
SPRAVATO® (esketamine) is a prescription nasal spray indicated for treatment-resistant depression (TRD) as well as major depressive disorder (MDD) associated with suicidal ideation or behavior in adults.
It is used in combination with an SSRI or SNRI antidepressant when at least two other treatments have failed.
What makes SPRAVATO® different from traditional antidepressants is how it works in the brain — and how quickly it can begin to help.
How Does SPRAVATO® Work?
Most antidepressants work by increasing levels of neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. SPRAVATO® takes a completely different approach.
Esketamine works by increasing levels of glutamate — the most abundant chemical messenger in the brain — resulting in a greater impact on more brain cells at one time.
Through complex downstream mechanisms, it ultimately activates brain pathways that promote brain cell growth, the connections between cells, and neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to reorganize and adapt to new experiences.
The result is that many patients begin to experience relief significantly faster than with traditional antidepressants — sometimes within hours or days rather than weeks.
What Does Treatment Look Like?
SPRAVATO® is administered right here in our clinic under the direct supervision of our medical team. It is not a medication you take home.
Here’s what a typical treatment experience looks like:
Before Your Session Your provider will review your health history and current medications to confirm SPRAVATO® is appropriate for you. Your blood pressure will be checked before and after each session.
During Your Session You will self-administer the nasal spray in two to three doses, spaced five minutes apart, under the supervision of a healthcare provider. Many patients use this quiet time to rest and relax.
After Your Session The total treatment and observation time is approximately two hours. Because SPRAVATO® can cause temporary side effects such as dizziness or drowsiness, you will need a ride to and from every appointment — you cannot drive yourself.
Treatment Schedule The recommended schedule begins with twice-weekly sessions for four weeks, followed by once-weekly sessions for the next four weeks, and then once every one to two weeks for at least six months – based on how you respond and your provider’s guidance.
Is SPRAVATO® Right for You?
SPRAVATO® may be an option if you:
Have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder
Have tried at least two antidepressant medications without adequate relief
Are experiencing depression with thoughts of suicide or self-harm
Are looking for a faster-acting alternative to traditional antidepressants
Are under the care of a psychiatric provider and able to commit to the in-office treatment schedule
A thorough psychiatric evaluation will help determine whether SPRAVATO® is the right fit for your situation.
What to Expect: Possible Side Effects
SPRAVATO® is a powerful medication and we believe in being fully transparent with our patients. Side effects may include a transient increase in blood pressure, dissociation, and sedation. These effects are typically short-lived and occur during or shortly after your session — which is exactly why every treatment takes place in our supervised clinical setting, never at home.
Your care team will monitor you throughout every session and is available to address any concerns before, during, and after treatment.
SPRAVATO® has a BOXED WARNING. Please speak with your provider for full prescribing and safety information.
